Sukhothai

Sukhothai was the first great city in the area of what is now Thailand. The city was founded over 800 years ago and is considered to be the first capital. The Thai alphabet was developed here under the reign of Ram Khamhaeng the Great, who is considered the father of all the Thai people.

Phra Achana, Wat Si Chum

This giant buddha sits in an alcove outside the north city wall. Behind the buddha was an entrance (now sealed off) where someone could crawl inside and speak to people (most commonly soldiers) who would be worshipping him. When asked if this was the buddha where this could be done, the Thai tour guide responded, "This Buddha the Thai people believe can speak."
